The sun is an orchestra with many instrumental biological processes. Production of vitamin D is just one instrument strumming in the composition. The sunlight and melanin have perpetuated mammalian life on earth. It's an electric partner dance and you don't want to miss a beat!
There are several coordinated steps between the sun's energy (photons) and our eyes and skin. You'll find POMC (proopimelanocortin) genes almost everywhere in the body. POMC cleaves into several constituents, one of which is alpha-MSH (alpha melanocyte stimulating hormone) which makes melanin. Why is melanin so important? Because melanin absorbs every light frequency length, it serves as our battery bank, accumulating electrons for energy at a cellular level! That's right, it doesn't just produce pigmentation in our skin, eyes and hair. Its ability to accumulate electrons in our system makes it a natural antioxidant and grounding source. Besides grounding your feet and hands on the wet sand or grass, melanin is nature's best antioxidant source. You might be surprised to learn that melanin, hemoglobin and our mitochondria are wide band semi-conductors, serving as UV light antennas. Even more awe striking, this gives us the ability to MAKE light within us in the form of UVC!
Also to note about POMC: It is THE key driver for the Leptinmelanocortin pathway which plays an essential role in body weight. Since we've gone into the house and out of the sun, and in front of our computer screens, we have become blue light toxic. Blue light from "smart" devices interrupts this pathway, causing sugar and insulin synthesis without even eating.
